Role:                        Country Security and Safety Officer – Nigeria

Office Location:     Kaduna, Nigeria (24 months fixed term contract)

Sightsavers is recruiting for a Country Safety and Security Officer, reporting to the Global Head of Security. This role is responsible for the coordination of the country security plan within Nigeria. The Country Safety and Security Officer will ensure that local risk controls and standard operating procedures are adhered to and coordinates field safety. The position will be based in our office in Kaduna, Nigeria.

Key responsibilities for the Safety and Security Officer role include office security, domestic travel, international travel, communications and risk assessment.  This is an important and varied role and

duties will include:

  • Implementing and coordinating access control procedures
  • Managing office safety and security equipment such as fire and first aid kits and hibernation boxes
  • Coordinating journey management and conducting risk assessments on all journeys outside the office location
  • Acting as point of contact for traveller communications
  • Coordinating assessment of all hotels in Nigeria used by Sightsavers staff in line with SOPs
  • Coordinating and assessing all travel in Nigeria for international staff in conjunction with the Global Head of Security
  • Holding responsibilities for airport pick-ups and drop-offs
  • Delivering safety and security briefings to international visitors
  • Maintaining and updating the country welcome pack and arrivals brief
  • Holding the country emergency phone and maintaining the emergency communications system
  • Holding responsibility for all incident reporting within Nigeria
  • Coordinating country call tree, emergency contact lists and incident alert system
  • Assisting the GHoS and the Country Director in preparing risk assessments for current and new programmes
  • Attending INGO security forums as Sightsavers’ representative
  • Preparing monthly threat situational reports for the country director and GHoS
  • Coordinating vehicle safety checks in liaison with the lead driver
  • Ensuring all vehicles are registered and drivers are licensed
  • Ensuring all Sightsavers vehicles are equipped in line with SOPs
  • Responsibility for the vetting of third-party vehicle providers
  • Updating and maintaining approved hospital/clinic lists throughout Nigeria
  • Ensuring staff have appropriate medical equipment for domestic travel.

The ideal candidate will be a Nigerian national with a good understanding of operating in the central and northern states of Nigeria as well as having previous experience of working for an INGO. A security management qualification (CPP, PSP or equivalent) preferred.

Required skills include:

  • A good standard of spoken and written English
  • Previous police or military experience desirable due to wider contact network
  • Experience of conducting risk assessments
  • Solid understanding of physical security management processes.

Sightsavers is an international charity that works in more than 30 countries around the world to eliminate avoidable blindness and support people with visual impairments to live independently. Sightsavers is headquartered in the UK and has over 400 employees. It also has branches in Norway, Sweden, Ireland, Italy, India, the United States and the United Arab Emirates.

Sightsavers works with partners in order to provide a comprehensive range of eye care services. In 2013, Sightsavers' projects provided eye health examinations for nearly 14 million people, performed 300,000 eye operations, and treated over 100 million people for neglected tropical diseases.

People are also referred for treatment to prevent blindness or restore sight. Through community volunteers in developing countries, Sightsavers distributes medication to prevent blinding diseases. The charity also trains eye care workers and surgeons and funds operations.

Of the 30 countries Sightsavers works in, 23 are in Africa. These include Mozambique, Mali, Liberia and Kenya. Sightsavers is also present in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the Caribbean.

In addition to its medical work, Sightsavers works with partners in order to train specialist teaching staff and supply glasses, Braille kits and other learning tools. The charity aims to educate communities and reduce stigma around visual impairment and blindness. Through its work, people with visual impairments and other disabilities are supported to live independently, get an education and earn an income.

Sightsavers is also a campaigning organisation, working with national governments to tackle the root causes of avoidable blindness, such as lack of access to clean water and sanitation facilities. The charity’s ‘Put us in the Picture campaign calls on the international community to make global development inclusive of the world’s 800m people with disabilities. The campaign’s vision is for all people to have equal access to employment, education, healthcare and participation in society.

Backing up Sightsavers’ work around the world is a strong research capability. Research and policy work revolves around three priorities – health, education and social inclusion. Gathering and disseminating sound research evidence helps to ensure the charity’s programmes meet the needs of the people they are designed to serve. Research evidence is also a strong tool when advocating for policy changes with governments.

Sightsavers has many partners that assist with its aim of eliminating avoidable blindness and may also provide funding. Partners include the UK government’s Department for International Development, the European Union and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
