The Big Lottery Fund is the largest distributor of funds for good causes from the National Lottery. A UK wide, non-departmental public body they are sponsored by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) as part of the National Lottery family of distributors. Since 2004 they have awarded £9 billion to projects that improve the lives of millions of people. They ensure money raised by players of the National Lottery helps communities to achieve their ambitions and thrive. They do this by awarding grants, bringing communities together, and sharing what they learn with communities, other funders and the government.

Your new role

As the Senior Head of Policy and Public Affairs, you will work with the Senior Management Team to set the strategic direction of the organisation’s policy development, public affairs and influencing activity and contribute to an effective and collaborative working culture. You will work with the Knowledge and Learning Directorate, grant making teams and colleagues across the UK to identify opportunities to use learning from engagement work to inform the Fund’s work as a grant maker and a catalyst.

You will identify and create opportunities for the people and organisations the Big Lottery Fund supports to be more involved in informing national and local policy and practice. A key component of all this activity will be the ability to convene stakeholders at engaging and thought leading events and gatherings hosted by the Fund. This requires analytical rigour and a strong policy focus to ensure engagements with stakeholders are substantive and evidence based, not surface level.

What you'll need to succeed

The successful candidate will be a leader who can drive a high performance culture by coaching, inspiring and empowering people to succeed; as well as creating a collaborative working environment which enables effective working relationships across the fund.  You will have demonstrable understanding of the public policy environment, developing issues and emerging themes.

You will have proven skills in policy development and analysis, coupled with political awareness and understanding. You will also have a strong understanding of public affairs, influencing and advocacy. Your project management skills and your ability to critically analyse information will be strong, along with your ability to build and nurture relationships with stakeholders and understand their needs. You will need to have strategic influencing skills and effective stakeholder engagement and management skills, including prior experience with internal stakeholders up to board and CEO level, and external stakeholders such as senior civil servants and policy specialists.  You will be creative and innovative in your approach and encourage others to work in this way.
