The British Geriatrics Society is the professional membership organisation for consultant geriatricians, GPs, nurses and other health professionals specialising in the healthcare of older people. We are a registered charity and limited company. Our charitable mission is to improve the healthcare of older people across the UK, adding life to years not just years to life. 

This is a very exciting time to be joining the British Geriatrics Society (BGS).  We recently celebrated our 70thanniversaryhave completed a period of expansion of the staff team, undertaken a rebranding process, and launched our new website. We have enhanced our policy influence, and seen a huge increase in our social media impact. We have an expanding membership of health professionals involved in the healthcare of older people with frailty or other complex needs. Our annual turnover is £1.5 million. Our office is in Farringdon, a vibrant area in central London where we employ 11 staff.   

The role:  

  • To report to and work in close partnership with the President and other trustees, most of whom are consultant geriatricians and other senior healthcare professionals
  • To ensure that the Society has a future vision and strategic plan 
  • To lead the senior management team, and to lead, support and motivate the staff team as a whole.

The person:

  • Commitment to BGS’s mission and aims
  • Successful experience as a Chief Executive in the UK charity or healthcare sector
  • Successful experience of leading organisation-wide strategic planning and change management
  • Successful experience of overall responsibility for financial strategy for a charity or healthcare organisation of comparable size and complexity 
  • Successful experience of developing teams, including senior management teams
  • At least 5 years’ experience of people management
  • Proven ability to raise the profile and influence of a national charity or similar organisation
  • Must enjoy leading and working in a small team, and a very varied and busy workload, with a full range of responsibilities.  Must be able to transition easily between the strategic and the routine.
