Job Details

Business Development Manager based MSSC HQ, London SE1 7JW

Salary: £35K to £37K gross per annum, dependent upon relevant skills and experience.

Permanent.

We believe that seafarers deserve access to life enhancing education wherever they are in the world. We enact this belief through Learn@Sea, our award winning digital education platform. Learn@Sea is a massive open online course platform for seafarers that hosts a growing portfolio of maritime contextualised education content. Over the last four years more than 10,000 seafarers have improved their English and maths through Learn@Sea and some of world’s leading shipping companies have used our programmes to develop their crews’ skills.

As Business Development Manager you will have overall responsibility for the continued development of Learn@Sea including growing the portfolio of courses on offer, the number of individual learners with us, and the number of corporate users working with us on crew development.

This is a challenging role which is ideal for an entrepreneurial self-starter who has experience of software sales and digital marketing within the maritime sector, and ideally has spent time at sea in either the Merchant or Royal Navy, though this is not essential. The Business Development Manager will principally be responsible for:

  • Developing Marine Society’s Learn@Sea platform to grow the course offering and number of users on the platform.
  • Growing current revenue streams for the charity by creating and implementing a sales and marketing strategy for the Learn@Sea product offering, and establishing new revenue streams by partnering with industry to create new and innovative product and service offerings.
  • Work with the Marine Society College team to develop and promote the charity’s full education offering to seafarers, shipping companies, and the wider maritime sector.

The successful candidate will be set clear goals and have the freedom to achieve them as they see fit. This is a chance to continue to grow a world leading education service and help reinforce Marine Society as the preeminent organisation within the seafarer lifelong learning space, both in the UK and internationally.

Marine Society’s education team is small but highly efficient. The successful applicant will be expected to fit into this team and demonstrate an ability to work closely with other members. Support and encouragement are an integral part of the team’s work ethic. Specific roles and responsibilities are held by each member but there is a valuable interaction in all areas which aids the team-spirit and effectiveness of Marine Society.

Regardless of background, the individual will need to be able to demonstrate the ability to work effectively un-supervised and have the interpersonal skills and credibility to engage shipping companies and the maritime sector at senior level.

Applications should consist of a completed application form, and the completed equal opportunities monitoring form, both available from the website.

Company

We at MSSC are passionate about providing a brighter future to young people nationwide and to seafarers, wherever they may be.

MSSC’s vision of being the leading maritime charity for youth development and lifelong learning aligns these two great charities under a common cause – to support all of our beneficiaries so they can achieve their best potential, whatever path they choose.

For the Sea Cadets, this means: inspiring and supporting the next generations through nautical adventure so they can realise their potential and grab a better future.

For the Marine Society, this means: Enabling seafarers with the right tools to get to where they want to be through learning and self development.
