Senior Development Officer (North America)
University of Manchester
£40,000- £49,100, depending on experience

The University of Manchester is part of the prestigious Russell Group of British research universities and is the product of the civic university movement of the late-19th century. With 25 Nobel Prize winners among its current and former staff and students, it has a history of world firsts and brilliant discoveries, from splitting the atom, to the first stored-program computers, to giving the world the brand new wonder material, ‘graphene’. The University’s vision is to be one of the leading universities in the world by 2020 through its commitment to world-class research, outstanding learning and student experience, and social responsibility.

Development and Alumni Engagement is an integral part of the University of Manchester today, with a President and Vice Chancellor who is personally engaged and over 400,000 alumni around the world. Over the past ten years, the University has significantly grown its fundraising income, with almost £100M received in the past five years alone. Philanthropic gifts to the University transform lives for the better through funding critical research into causes such as cancer, energy, and global poverty, and through the provision of scholarships.

To leverage new opportunities for philanthropy and alumni engagement, the University now seeks to appoint two Senior Development Officers for North America to focus on the East and West Coasts respectively. Both are key, newly created positions to support the advancement of the University’s international programme and are critical to its success.

Your experience in working with high net-worth individuals will be instrumental in driving the future success of the North American development strategy. These are front-line major gift fundraising positions with responsibility for a portfolio of donors and prospective donors from which you will personally solicit gifts at the 5- to 7-figure level. You will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the University’s North American philanthropic programme and in so doing, will be funding a multitude of global causes.

You will have a proven record in securing philanthropic gifts from potential major benefactors, expertise in relationship management, a passion for Higher Education, and a high level of motivation in meeting alumni, parents, and friends to engage their support. Above all, you will be a creative thinker with a strong sense of integrity and a values-driven approach to philanthropic fundraising.

These posts are based in Manchester with a requirement for regular international travel across to the USA and Canada. You will be expected to undertake a minimum of 6 trips to North America per annum to meet with alumni and solicit gifts. A reduced working week, flexible hours and a portion of home working are all possibilities for outstanding candidates.

This is the perfect time to join the team at the University of Manchester and anopportunity for a proven fundraiser to play an integral role in one of the most successful fundraising teams in the UK, whilst taking the next step in your fundraising career and gaining exposure to best practice in North American fundraising. These posts will suit ambitious, talented and dynamic fundraisers looking to gain lucrative international experience to further their career.
