The role

The Communities Division is seeking an exceptional candidate to support the development of our innovative, community-focused work around the delivery of the Counter-Extremism Strategy locally. The role will play an important role in building resilience across the borough, promoting cohesion across all communities, and challenging extremism ideologies of all kinds through engagement and support.

You will have a good understanding of the borough and it diverse communities, and knowledge of the Government’s Counter-Extremism agenda and its priorities. In this high-profile role, you will work with colleagues to develop strong and effective partnerships throughout the borough, particularly with grassroots community organisations committed to challenging extremism and hatred through promotion of positive values like cohesion, respect, and tolerance.

In practice, for this important role you will require:

  • Considerable experience of community engagement, and the ability to develop strong partnerships with local organisations.
  • A good understand of what constitutes cohesion, violent and non-violent extremism, and the range of actions and interventions that can create strong communities, as well as of the Government’s Counter-Extremism Strategy.
  • Exceptional communication skills, including the ability to articulate a clear and inclusive vision to communities and stakeholders.
  • Strong political awareness and the ability to negotiate effectively and balance competing priorities to achieve positive outcomes.

Your work will contribute to Southwark Council’s commitment to supporting strong, safe, and cohesive communities. Candidates with relevant research skills and/or previous work in relation to understanding and supporting communities will be particularly welcomed.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Due to the nature of the work, you will be required to work flexibly, including attending and events outside of normal working hours and at weekends when necessary. 

You will also need to be willing to undertake and enhanced DBS check and Home Office security checks before commencing the role, in addition to relevant employment checks.

Fixed-term post until 31st March 2019, with the possibility of extension (subject to external funding). Secondments can be considered.
