St Albans School is one of the oldest schools in Europe. We are seeking a School Archivist that will be responsible for ensuring that the historic records of the School are conserved, maintained and developed. The St Albans School Foundation was established in 2008 to raise funds from alumni and parents of the School to provide bursaries and to fund specified capital projects. The Development Office is responsible for fostering relationships between the School and its former pupils and current parents, with the aim of encouraging their support of the Foundation. The management and organisation of the School’s Museum and archives is also the responsibility of the Development Office.
As the School Archivist, your main responsibilities will be to care for and maintain the School’s current archives in line with best practice. Other responsibilities include evaluating materials (sourcing expert advice where necessary), promotion of the Museum and School archives, liaising with donors and depositors of archives, dealing with enquiries and supervising volunteers and Lower Sixth pupils who assist as part of School activity programmes. The role is also responsible for establishing and maintaining relevant office administration systems and providing some administrative support to the Development Office when required.
The role would suit a self-motivated individual comfortable working on his or her own initiative. You will need to be highly organised with a methodical approach and excellent attention to detail. Competent computer skills are required, to include experience with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook and Publisher along with the ability update and manipulate a CRM system. Ideally, you will have a diploma or other postgraduate archive management qualification. A good standard of Mathematics and English is essential in addition to exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
Weekly hours are 18 per week, worked over a minimum of three days, to include Friday afternoons during term time plus two weeks annually during School holidays. A degree of flexibility is required as hours may vary on occasion depending on projects and events, which may include occasional evening/weekend work.
