Background

The Silver Line is the UK’s only free, confidential, 24-hour helpline for vulnerable and isolated older people available every day and night of the year.  Since our national launch in November 2013 we have received almost 2m calls, some simply “to say goodnight”.  We have also recruited and trained over 4000 volunteers as Silver Line Friends who make weekly calls to older people or exchange a letter.  Thanks to early support from the Big Lottery Fund and Founding Partners, the charity has established robust services in all areas of its helpline and friendship operations. The Silver Line has now moved into its next phase of development and needs to significantly grow further dependable, sustainable income from multiple sources. To achieve this, it is essential that we implement an ambitious stakeholder communications strategy which engages and encourages long term support of the organisation.

Purpose

We are looking for an outstanding communicator who can create and develop engaging, regular stakeholder communications, both internal and external for beneficiaries, supporters, volunteers and staff.  Your objective will be to raise the charity’s profile, ensuring that we consistently convey strong, clear messages keeping the targeted audiences engaged and fully informed of all relevant activities. You will need to be a natural storyteller with the ability to connect to a variety of audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver the communications strategy to support the achievement of the organisation’s strategy and objectives
  • Foster excellent relationships with media contacts and maximise media opportunities (in line with the agreed plan)
  • Work with the Director of Operations and operational team to ensure we collate a strong and diverse range of case studies
  • Support older people, staff and volunteers as appropriate with regard to all media activity
  • Develop and deliver a digital and social media strategy in collaboration with the Digital and Social Media Executive
  • Manage all internal and external communications, creating comprehensive communications plans and schedules
  • Work closely with the Director of Fundraising to ensure communications effectively support the income generation strategy and targets
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of internal and external stakeholders needs, preferences and perceptions with regard to communications
  • Provide high quality, relevant information and tools to empower Silver Line staff and volunteers to communicate confidently and effectively with supporters
  • Ensure absolute consistency of style, brand and tone of voice across all areas of the organisation
  • Writing and producing supporter and beneficiary newsletters

Person specification

We are looking for an excellent communicator possessing the following

  • Excellent copy writing and editing skills
  • Strong analytical mind with the ability to turn complex information into compelling narrative for a variety of audiences
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in communications, PR or journalism
  • Solid and demonstrable experience and interest in social media
  • Demonstrable experience of delivering creative ideas for impactful communications in a complex and competitive media landscape;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to develop and nurture relationships both internally and externally, including complex multi-stakeholder relationships
    • Understanding of data protection legislation
    • Excellent PC skills (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Effective time management and organisational skills. Ability to multi task and work effectively under pressure, managing changing priorities whilst maintaining excellent and scrupulous attention to detail
  • Ability to take initiative
