Westminster Boating Base (WBB) was established in 1975 and teaches dinghy sailing, powerboating, kayaking and canoeing to young people and adults in central London. Its primary objective, stated the charity’s trust deed, is:
“To help educate young people through their leisure time activities, so as to develop their physical, mental and spiritual capacities that they may grow to full maturity as individuals and members of society and that their conditions of life may be improved”.
Located on the River Thames in a secluded riverside park, WBB operates throughout the year for young people aged 10 – 23 years who can gain membership as individuals, or as part of a school, youth or community group. There are no restrictions on who may attend and young people come from all over London - the primary outreach is naturally local. The charity also seeks to benefit young people beyond the mere acquisition of watersports skills, and attendees are encouraged to work together and develop their social skills in a sensible and safe way. Westminster Boating Base also arranges activities for adults, both on a fee paying and semi-charitable basis as appropriate.
The Base’s spacious function and meeting rooms with riverfront balconies are also available to hire as a venue for parties (both corporate and private), conferences, seminars, wedding receptions and other events.
The new Director, in addition to leading and managing the charity’s daily work and output, will play a key role in developing the strategy to ensure the delivery of the objective. The trustees are therefore seeking applicants, inspired by the charity’s purpose, who have the motivation and energy to make a positive difference to the lives and experience of young people and are able to take the charity forward with confidence into the future.
To meet the requirements of this most exciting and fulfilling position, applicants should be able to demonstrate that they meet the following skill and experience requirements:
- Educated to degree level or professional equivalent.
- Have run a business and/or achieved demonstrable success in significant leadership and management roles.
