Prospectus is delighted to be supporting The Barristers' Benevolent Association to recruit their Assistant Secretary.

Supporting past and present practising members of the Bar in England and Wales and their families, The Barristers' Benevolent Association delivers financial grants and provides support for serious, long-term or terminal illnesses as well as unforeseen circumstances beyond the beneficiary's control. The aim is, wherever possible, to overcome the problem and rebuild the individual's life and career. Being part of a small team, this role will be pivotal in supporting beneficiaries from the initial application stage, right through to making payments and buying food vouchers.

Reporting to the Secretary, the purpose of this role is to provide financial and secretarial support to the organisation in its entirety. You will have a varied role with responsibility for general bookkeeping, office administration and acting as a first point of contact for applicants and beneficiaries. Day-to-day bookkeeping duties will include paying invoices, salaries and monthly benefits and processing Gift Aid claims. You will be responsible for monthly bank reconciliation and petty cash as well as producing financial reports at Committee meetings. You will also be responsible for organising all aspects of the annual audit. General office duties include sharing the out of hours telephone line and liaising with stakeholders such as solicitors, investment managers and other professional advisers. You will be required to attend events as and when required.

To be considered for this role it is essential to have proven bookkeeping skills ranging across all aspects of finance including making payments and financial auditing. You are required to have excellent written and verbal communication skills with an empathetic approach, particularly when dealing with stressful situations. The placed candidate will ideally have a hands-on attitude, accompanied by a broad range of skills across finance and office administration. A financial qualification, ideally AAT Level four, is desirable.
