Director of Finance & Operations, The Ernest Cook Trust

The Ernest Cook Trust (ECT) (http://ernestcooktrust.org.uk) was founded as an educational trust by Ernest Cook, grandson of Thomas Cook, in 1952.  The Trust was endowed with 14,462 acres of agricultural land, which has grown through acquisition and endowment to over 22,000 acres today, with an asset value of £180m. Our head office is based on the Fairford Estate in Gloucestershire.

Our Vision is inspiring young people to achieve better educational and life outcomes by learning from the land.

The Ernest Cook Trust has three main functions:

  • management of its landed estates (22,000 acres in 5 counties);
  • educational support through grant giving (around £2m per annum); and
  • direct provision of education (32,000 pupil visits per year).

THE ROLE

The Director of Finance & Operations will have a key role in the Trust, working as part of a small senior management team, to ensure sound and appropriate financial governance and risk management.  The successful candidate will have full accountability and responsibility for the provision and quality of management information to support the Chief Executive and Trustees in resource allocation, business performance management and property development evaluation/implementation.

The successful applicant will report directly to the Chief Executive, who reports to the Trustees of the charity and will be based at the head office in Fairford.  The Director of Finance & Operations has involvement at Trustee meetings and is a member of both the Development committee and the Investment committee.

The Director of Finance & Operations will be expected to ensure the timely delivery of monthly management accounts and annual financial statements and to form a close working relationship with the Trust’s accountants.  Of equal importance is responsibility for a range of critical business functions including data handling and storage, finance, IT, procurement, human resources, health & safety, charity and company law compliance, ensuring these services effectively support the successful delivery of the Trust’s vision and charitable objectives.
