There are an estimated 50 million donkeys and mules worldwide. Most are working to support livelihoods in some of the poorest and most marginalised communities in the world and have a vital role to play in human happiness and survival. Many need care and protection from a life of suffering and neglect.

Donkey Welfare Advisers are professionals at the front line of donkey and mule welfare in the UK. This is an exciting time to join our innovative organisation, as we expand our work on an unprecedented scale.

We are seeking a Senior Donkey Welfare Adviser to effectively lead, support and manage the GB team.  As a proactive and passionate ambassador for The Donkey Sanctuary, you will grow and support a quality Rehoming Scheme across Great Britain whilst ensuring the charity operates a 24 hour, 7 day a week response to donkeys in need.

Possessing a working knowledge of legal practicalities and application of relevant animal welfare legislation, you will identify team training needs, ensuring skills are regularly updated in line with best practice and changes in animal welfare law. Proven experience of leading investigations and the court process, you will gather, prepare and present objective evidence, verbally and in writing, in a professional and effective manner, representing The Donkey Sanctuary in court as required.  You will also ensure our team is best placed to take appropriate action and preventative steps to prevent donkeys and mules suffering from cruelty, distress or poor treatment.

Liaising closely with the Head of Welfare, you will provide effective leadership to the Donkey Welfare Adviser team, ensuring that objectives for donkey welfare are efficiently and effectively achieved in support of the charity’s welfare strategy across the organisation. You will inspire and empower the team to consistently maintain the very highest standards at all times, ensuring they understand their roles and responsibilities and appreciate their vital contribution to the charity’s strategic objectives.

Proven management abilities, including successful management of a remote team and the issues that they face, together with excellent customer service, communication, public speaking, negotiation and influencing skills are essential. Equine knowledge, an understanding of equine behaviour and the ability to demonstrate previous practical delivery of this in the field is desirable.

If you feel you have the skills, experience and passion to fulfill this varied and rewarding role, and would like to be part of the evolutional program of change taking place within the charity, we would love to hear from you. This is a full-time, permanent contract starting as soon as possible, working an average of 37.5 hours per week on an annualised hours basis.  This is a Homeworking position with the successful candidate ideally living in a central location with good access to travel networks with a willingness to travel throughout GB as required.
