A compelling role as Programme Manager, focused on progressing the Trust's place-based strategy and developing corporate partnerships

Power to Change is an independent charitable trust endowed with £150 million from the Big Lottery Fund to support community businesses across England over the next 7-10 years. Power to Change acts as a community businesses champion through the provision of funding and support on a local level. They also aim to play a broader national leadership and advocacy role to enhance the market for community business and increase awareness of its social and economic benefits.

Role Purpose:

Key member of the team developing and delivering Power to Change place-based strategy for growing and strengthening the community business sector in England.

Responsibilities:

1)  Place-based initiatives

Developing and overseeing the delivery of Power to Change’s strategies for growing and strengthening community businesses in up to 5 English cities, including Liverpool and Bristol:

  • Developing and refining strategies for each city to increase the number of community businesses: strengthen existing community businesses and ensure collaboration between community businesses and other key stakeholders in the cities.
  • Contracting locally based external organisations and individuals to coordinate strategy delivery in cities as required.
  • Project manage existing Power to Change programmes to ensure they understand their role in city strategies and are delivering those roles.  
  • Reporting on KPIs, finance and communications; record keeping (including use of Salesforce)

2) Managing corporate partnerships

Manage Power to Change’s corporate partnerships which engage their employees with community business as potential skills-based volunteers, customers and investors. Initially focused on developing and delivering a new partnership with Marks & Spencer.   

  • Project manage delivery of M&S / Power to Change programme across 7 places up to June 2019; to include working closely with local partners, embedding learning into the programme, and seeking opportunities to continuously improve it.
  • Develop programme to use M&S staff skills-based volunteering to support new and established community businesses in 7 places across England:  Birmingham, Bradford, Liverpool, Rochdale, Middlesbrough, Norwich, London Borough of Newham
  • Working with Power to Change communications team to ensure that in addition to community businesses benefitting directly from M&S support the partnership contributes to growing the community business movement
  • Planning the evaluation of programmes across 7 places based on Power to Change and M&S objectives, working closely with the Power to Change Research Institute.
  • Lead on decision making process for whether and how the M&S partnership could be expanded from 2019. 
  • Reporting on KPIs, finance and communications; record keeping (including use of Salesforce)

Essential skills & experience:

  • Strong project design experience
  • Strong project management experience and attention to detail
  • Ability to work collaboratively and transparently with team members and external delivery partners
  • Ability to manage partners effectively
  • Flexibility and pragmatism
  • Comfortable developing and delivering programmes using a test and learn approach
  • Understanding of community business and experience of working with them or social or small enterprises
  • Experience of working with corporates and developing relationships with them
  • Experience working within communities and delivering change at a local level

Desired skills & experience

  • Working knowledge of 1 or more of the places where the M&S programme is to be delivered.
  • Experience of Salesforce (Customer Relationship Management system)
  • Experience of skills-based volunteering as a coordinator or volunteer
  • Ability to see strategic opportunities and connections with other programmes
  • Comfortable in a public facing role
  • Willingness to travel (to London and on occasion to other Power to Change funded areas)
  • Experience of grant funding or place based support/capacity building programmes

  • Delivery partners, consultants and organisations working with Power to Change
  • Community businesses at all stages
  • Local Authorities and other local government entities, service providers and membership organisations for community business, corporate partners
  • The Power to Change Grants Committee
  • The Power to Change Research Institute, appointed evaluators and researchers
