The Joel Community Trust (now registered as Joel Community Services as a Charitable Company Limited by Guarantee) launched the 3 phase Joel Community project in November 2010. Aiming to put HOME back into homelessness we provide wholesome meals, friendship and shelter to people experiencing homelessness at the same time making long-term interventions through partnering with a long-established highly specialised charitable organisations.
We are Kingston's only permanent Night Shelter accepting male and female guests regardless of background, eligibility to funds, religion or race, we are for some the only opportunity for a safe place to sleep. Each year 75 regular volunteers are given an opportunity to make a difference in the community, we also partner with local schools, churches, businesses, community groups and resident's associations; In order to end the cycle of homelessness our guests need to reintegrate into the community.
Job Role Information
We are open to a job sharing arrangement on a pro-rata basis.
Contract Type: Permanent, subject to a probation period of six months.
Hours: 37 hours per week. This may exceptionally include providing cover on a few evenings and the occasional weekend.
Annual leave: 20 days plus 8 days public holidays.
Period of notice: 2 weeks.
Pension: Joel Community Services offers a workplace pension which staff are eligible to join during their first three months of employment.
Reporting to: Night Shelter Manager
- Assist the Night Shelter Manager with the smooth running of the shelter.
- Under the oversight of the Night Shelter Manager, take the lead on all operational financial issues (including collecting the service charge).
- Produce, monitor and keep updated all operating policies and procedures.
- Manage guests’ bookings and benefit claims.
- Oversee data management and the management of the premises and facilities.

This is not a definitive list of tasks - it is designed to give an overall view of the job. Joel Community Services is a small organisation and the post holder will be committed to the work of the organisation as a whole. From time to time it may be necessary to step beyond these areas to support the organisation in its wider goals.
Knowledge, skills and experience
Excellent organisational skills, able to work under pressure, to prioritise and meet deadlines. A good understanding of operational financial issues. The ability to produce and monitor clear, practical and fair operational systems and procedures. Competence in the management and use of statistics to document and demonstrate the performance of the shelter. Strong stakeholder management skills (communication, negotiation) with particular reference to the relationship with KCAH.
A performance plan will be agreed with you periodically to describe the priorities and outcomes expected for the period.
Manage the operational finances of the shelter, including day to day budgeting, cash flow, revenue streams and control of expenditure, and maintain clear records of these. Review all the shelter’s policies on an annual basis, recommend how they should be updated, ensure that, once approved, they are communicated to staff and volunteers. Manage the procedure for booking in guests, sorting out their benefit claims and collecting the service charge. Maintain accurate records of each guest, the throughput and the outcome of each stay. Maintain liaison with KCAH and resolve any issues that may arise. Undertake any other reasonable activity at the behest of the Night Shelter Manager. Manage any issues arising from the tenancy of Kingston Churches Action on Homelessness.
