Development Director

Downing College, University of Cambridge

Very competitive salary

Downing is an exceptional college at a world-class university. It is a distinctive community: diverse, close-knit and committed.  Founded in 1800, it is known as a friendly College and possesses one of the largest campus spaces in the heart of Cambridge city centre. Its beautiful neo-classical buildings are set in fine open gardens.

Downing has the reputation of being a welcoming, scholarly College and is home to about 650 students and 50 Fellows, all supported by over 165 staff.

The College has one of the longest-established and highly-regarded development offices in Oxbridge.  Founded in 1996, it has had significant success, recently exceeding its £20 million goal for the ‘Catalysis Campaign’. The successful candidate will join an institution that is fully engaged with philanthropic fundraising.  It has warm relationships with its alumni, who include Michael Atherton, Michael Apted, Quentin Blake, John Cleese, Andy Hamilton, Thandie Newton, Trevor Nunn and Amol Rajan.

As a Fellow, the Development Director plays a vital role in College. The Development Director will report to and work closely with the Master, Professor Geoffrey Grimmett, and will manage a dedicated team of four. Working collaboratively and confidently with the Master, Senior Bursar and the Fellows, the successful candidate will join one of the world’s leading academic institutions to manage a well-run and effective office, with the potential to raise gifts at a transformational level.

The College is in the planning stages of its next, more ambitious campaign. At an exciting time to join Downing, the new Development Director will be at the centre of planning the new campaign from the beginning. The postholder will be responsible for honing the strategy to maximise fundraising potential related to the projects, prioritise targets and lead the major-gift activity. He or she will bring innovative approaches to current activities, lead the major fundraising efforts and plan future strategic directions.

This appointment is a unique chance to join a distinguished Cambridge College and an outstanding opportunity for a highly-successful and energetic fundraising professional with an innovative and creative approach. The role requires excellent management and strategic planning abilities.

Candidates must have substantial fundraising experience and a proven track record of securing significant, transformative philanthropic gifts.
