We have a fantastic opening for a Head of Strategic Communications to join a dynamic and influential leadership team at the British Red Cross.
This is an incredibly varied role working across all parts of the organisation to oversee the ongoing development and implementation of our communication and engagement strategy.
In the UK and overseas, our staff and volunteers respond to many of the defining issues of our time. These range from the health and social care needs of an aging population; domestic terror attacks and major fire incidents; the refugee crisis in Europe; right through to issues of protracted conflict and chronic hunger driving migration across the world.
Our reshaped Communications and Engagement Directorate is charged with giving voice to people in crisis. We are looking for outstanding advocates, communicators and creatives to join us and help take our engagement and influencing to the next level.

About the role
The Head of Strategic Communication is responsible for ensuring that an overarching strategic engagement plan is in place to help deliver the British Red Cross' objectives, both in the UK and overseas.
About the team
The Head of Strategic Communication works as part of the Communication and Engagement Directorate management team. You will lead the business partnering and planning function, which shapes briefs with the operational (UK and international), fundraising and corporate teams to develop audience-focussed, channel-agnostic communications and engagement plans, which support our strategic priorities.
As an evidence-led, audience-focussed strategic planner you will lead the team to ensure they use insight to inform activity and continually look to improve our strategic communications.
You will manage a small but senior team of strategic communications planning partners who engage with senior stakeholders within the organisation to ensure plans build from our brand and advocacy strategies. They are responsible for helping to prioritise the work of the Directorate and evaluate its effectiveness, and to champion ever closer integration to optimise customer experience (both internally and externally).
You will also oversee our Corporate Communication function, ensuring our staff & volunteer communications are integrated with stakeholder, media and public campaigns activity, shaping the way in which the British Red Cross is talked about amongst our people and presented to the outside world.
About the person
Candidates should have:
- Significant strategic planning experience with the ability to anticipate partners' needs and make the case for effective communications support
- Ability to assess and balance business needs with effective communications support, and constructively challenge partners where necessary
- Ability to prioritise, work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Significant experience of line management of multi-disciplinary teams of professional specialists
- Developing and implementing and evaluation communications strategies, especially internal communications.
