Lichfield Cathedral is one of the oldest places of Christian worship in Britain and the original burial place of the Anglo Saxon missionary, St Chad.  Under the guidance of The Very Revd Adrian Dorber, Dean of Lichfield, the Cathedral is the spiritual centre of the Church of England’s Diocese of Lichfield. Worship has taken place on this site for over 1300 years.  The Cathedral Chapter has embarked on a challenging strategic development of the Cathedral and its Close, designed to secure a step change in the number of people visiting and worshipping at the Cathedral over the next 10 years.

The Challenge

Ø  Reporting to the Executive Director and heading up a small team, you will deploy your proven fundraising experience and success in both annual income and major capital generation.

Ø  Supporting the delivery of the strategic vision of the Cathedral, you will be required to substantially increase the level of giving through restricted and unrestricted sources.

Ø  You will develop positive and beneficial relationships with high net worth individuals, the Heritage Lottery Fund, charities, corporations, trusts and foundations.

Ø  You will also represent the Cathedral community commercially and corporately and assist with the development of the Appeals Committee and a legacy programme.

Ø  The successful candidate will also work closely with internal and external marketing professionals to enhance the Cathedral’s public profile and recognition.


The Candidate

Ø  Candidates must be of Graduate calibre and have a demonstrably successful track record in high value capital fundraising, ideally including experience of successful applications to the Heritage Lottery Fund or Big Lottery or other well established sources of heritage and educational funding.

Ø  Ideally, the candidate should be a communicant member of the Church of England but must be sympathetic and understanding of the Church’s mission and the particular responsibilities of Cathedrals within the Church of England.  Paragraph 3 of Schedule 9 of the Equality Act 2010 applies.  Knowledge of Church-based charities will be highly advantageous.

Ø  Energy and infectious enthusiasm are essential as well as top level communication skills whilst membership of the Institute of Fundraising and an interest in history, heritage and culture would be advantageous.

Ø  Serious contenders will be inveterate networkers with strong research and analytical skills, together with the confidence and knowledge to represent the Cathedral to high profile decision makers and influencers.

Ø  Must be a team player and builder, able to contribute fully to the Executive Management Team and Chapter of the Cathedral.  The appointed candidate will be expected to live within reasonable commuting distance of Lichfield.  Relocation assistance is available.
