University College London Union
General Information

University College London Union (UCLU) provides a diverse range of social, sporting, commercial, support and representative services to members of University College London, (UCL), one of the world’s leading universities.

UCL Union is run by students, for students; its structure is democratic and it operates transparently with members at the heart of its governance and its provision of services and activities. A 100 member Union Council, (with representatives drawn from each College faculty and hall of residence), forms the overall governing body which supervises the activities of a number of junior committees. The day to day orientation of the Union is managed by the Executive Committee, working closely with the management team to ensure effective implementation of Council and Committee determined priorities. The Executive Committee comprises six Sabbatical Officers, who work full time for the Union and ten non-Sabbatical Officers, all of whom are elected from and by the UCL student body.

A staff team of over 100 permanent staff, headed by the Chief Executive, is employed to manage and deliver the services, facilities, and activities provided by the Union. A further 250 student staff (working on a part-time basis) are employed each week

Services and Facilities
The Union’s operations span eight sites, six of which are on the main Bloomsbury campus. Services and facilities operated by the Union include two retail outlets; five coffee shops/catering outlets, seven bars featuring regular entertainment and a hairdressing salon. The Union’s ample sports facilities include a fitness centre, an international-size indoor sports hall, and a 100-acre sports ground.

Extensive facilities for student support and personal development are also provided by the Union including an advice centre, a job-shop, a Volunteering Unit and facilities for clubs and societies. Students are also able to direct and participate in the activities of over 160 sports clubs, cultural and educational societies, and media and performing arts groups.
As a result UCL Union’s effectiveness in meeting the needs of a diverse body of students is widely recognised both by members of College as well as externally.

UCL is one of the UK’s premier universities.  It is a world-class research and teaching institution based in London whose staff and former students have included 19 Nobel Prize winners.  Founded in 1826, it was the only university in England at that time which admitted students regardless of race or religion.  UCL was also the first to admit women on equal terms with men.  Today UCL is a friendly university in which to work and study and it continues to thrive on the diversity and creativity of its community.

UCL is in practice a university in its own right, although constitutionally a college within the federal University of London.  With an annual turnover exceeding £500 million, it is financially and managerially independent of the University of London.

The UCL community

UCL currently employs approximately 8,000 staff and includes academic units as diverse as the Slade School of Fine Art, the Bartlett School of Architecture and the Institute of Child Health, which is associated with Great Ormond Street Hospital.  In total, there are 70 Academic Departments and Institutes whose activities span the following: arts and humanities, social and historical sciences, law, architecture and the built environment, engineering, mathematical and physical sciences, life and clinical sciences, and medicine.  UCL’s academic and research staff are a truly international community with more than a quarter coming from 84 countries outside the UK.

13,000 undergraduates and 8,000 graduate students study at UCL, of whom over 25% come from 130 countries outside the UK.  UCL offers 275 undergraduate programmes and more than 220 taught postgraduate programmes as well as the opportunity to carry out postgraduate research in all of its subjects.

UCL is consistently rated among the top four universities in the UK (together with Cambridge, Imperial College and Oxford) and in the 10 best universities in the world.

Location and working environment
Based in Bloomsbury, UCL is a welcoming, inclusive university situated at the heart of one of the world’s greatest cities.
