Institute of Mathematics and its Applications

The IMA is a leading learned society and professional body for the mathematics community with over 5,000 members in the UK and beyond, and a thriving network of e-students and supporters, comprising qualified and practising mathematicians from all sectors, as well as those with an interest in mathematics

Awarded a Royal Charter in 1990, our activities include professional recognition routes to recognise educational and professional attainment in mathematical sciences, Chartered designations for Mathematicians and Mathematics Teachers and accreditation of Maths related degrees for professional registration. We are also members of the recently formed Alliance for Data Science Professionals supporting professional standards development in data science

Maths remains at the forefront of finding solutions for major national and global issues, from sustainability and climate change, to pandemic modelling and medical science breakthroughs, global food shortages and shaping new technology. We are now excited to focus on growing and supporting our membership to ensure greater recognition of the important role maths plays in society and enhance the continued professionalism of our sector.
