About The Nuffield Foundation
The Nuffield Foundation is an endowed charitable trust, established in 1943 by William Morris (Lord Nuffield), the motor car manufacturer. With assets of some £200m and annual expenditure of £10m, it is one of the larger UK foundations.
Its fundamental mission, as set out in the trust deed, is “the advancement of social well being, particularly by scientific research…” The Foundation works mainly in the following fields: children and families; education; law and law reform; poverty and disadvantage; science education; and science and social science research capacity. Much of its work involves supporting research that will lead to improvements in policy and practice, or taking other initiatives to ensure that rigorous evidence is brought to bear on wider policy discussions.
