Could your campaigning help end the loneliness in older age?

The Campaign to End Loneliness is a network of organisations working together to reduce loneliness in older age. They are currently looking to recruit an outstanding Campaigns and Communications Manager on a three-day-a-week, job share basis.

Launched in February 2011, the Campaign to End loneliness is led by a management group of five partners including; Independent Age, Age UK Oxfordshire, Manchester City Council, Royal Voluntary Services and Sense.
The Campaign’s ultimate aim is to help make older age a more vibrant, inter-active prospect - rather than something to be dreaded by our aging population.

They work to achieve this is in three areas: influencing commissioners and policy makers to tackle loneliness;  building evidence to support the arguments and putting that information into the hands of those who can and will act on it; developing a learning network of supporter organisations who want to tackle loneliness, to help them share evidence and good practice.

The new Campaigns and Communications Manager will be expected to manage and deliver on all aspects of the first area above – influencing commissioners and policy makers through campaigning and media work – ensuring that these activities can be seen to influence policy and ultimately, commissioning and practice. Since the post is offered as a job share, both partners will be working a three-day week, but this post will focus on national campaigning and media. The successful candidate will need to build networks to achieve impact within Parliament, Government and other key national bodies.

In order to really make a splash in this role, Independent Age – one of the partners offering strategic direction and recruiting for this role on behalf of the campaign –believe the ideal candidate should be outgoing and a self-starter. A questioning style is vital as is the desire to drive through a planned programme of work, whilst still having the capacity to pick up a wide variety of different opportunities that enhance those work outcomes.

The role will be based in Shoreditch at the Campaign’s offices; however some travel within the UK as well as the very occasional foray abroad will be expected. The new campaign and comms manager will be working very closely with their job-share counterpart as well as being part of a very close-knit team – each of whom manages their own programme of work , yet have inter-locking areas that will require closer collaboration at times.

The day-to-day demands of the role will certainly be far from mundane. Expect to brief senior journalists and represent the campaign in the media. The successful candidate will be expected to rub shoulders with and exert influence over senior Government figures and policy makers. Public speaking on behalf of the Campaign to End Loneliness at events and conferences will be integral to the role, so strong communication skills are essential. But perhaps the most important thing of all is the desire to make a difference to the lives of the older people. You will need to be at ease talking to older people and finding out what moves them and what they need to make their autumn days less lonely and get them to look forward to life and all it can still offer.
