Job Description

This role sits in the marketing, student recruitment, outreach and widening participation function (a part of the wider Marketing and Communications directorate). Overall the directorate is responsible for marketing of the profile of Queen Mary University and its educational programmes, and the attraction and recruitment of students from WP backgrounds as well as students from the UK more generally, EU and Overseas.

The purpose of this role is :

  • Be the accountable point of leadership for central marketing planning and overseeing functional specilaism of CRM, email marketing, data management, campaign management and conversion, market insight, intelligence and reporting.
  • To provide strategic leadership for international and domestic digital marketing, overseeing a network of marketing agencies based across the globe to deliver campaigns.
  • To manage and deliver high profile (budget and exposure) marketing projects across international and domestic landscapes
  • To provide university-wide leadership across CRM - Salesforce (including marketing cloud, advertising studio and sprout social)
  • To empower staff within functional areas to take responsibility for driving forward change and improvement agendas through formal management or informal coaching / influencing.
  • To line manage 2 direct reports and have accountability for a team of 10 staff.
  • To play an active role as a senior figure and part of the management team
  • To manage a budget ensuring value for money is received across all digital marketing activities and market insights
  • To provide leadership, management and support for the whole team
  • To provide a senior point of escalation and cover in the absence of core functions enabling business continuity if and when required



This role will combine a few elements:

  • Data and insight - Work alongside colleagues across the directorate to research and evaluate best practice solutions for data integrations into CRM
  • Ideas - Lead the development, implementation and review of effective marketing and student recruitment strategies and using your marketing expertise, introduce effective initiatives to continuously improve ways of working and deliverables.
  • Implementation - Provide functional leadership across the institution and within the team and directorate relating to CRM, campaigns and marketing for student recruitment (acquisition and conversion), content marketing and market intelligence. This will entail advising senior managers and colleagues across the institution, representing the function internally and externally, producing higher level plans and reports, setting a direction for the team that meets University needs and reviewing / making recommendations for improvements.
  • Impact - Lead in the identification of evaluation criteria for student recruitment and how insights will be gathered, used, reported on and shared across the directorate and university

The Successful Applicant

  • Experience of using Saleforce, including marketing cloud or alternative marketing automation systems
  • Experience of working as a strategic business partner to internal business units, representing and leading the function and providing a point of escalation for business partners
  • Excellent knowledge of student recruitment journeys in an education environment and proven ability to meet recruitment or other equivalent growth targets
  • Proven experience in managing strategic vendor relationships including procurement, contract negotiation, monitoring, escalations points and delivering value for money across devolved structures
  • The ability to robustly evaluate activities and projects, identify areas for improvement, and plan new approaches and tactics
  • Excellent IT skills including advanced knowledge of introducing new CRM systems, marketing platforms, databases and other relevant applications to support marketing processes
  • Proven track record of delivering projects to time and budget in fast paced environments
  • Experience of line management including recruitment, selection, team development, performance management, etc.
  • Ability to work across complex organisations in order to deliver high impact outcomes in a student recruitment or marketing function
  • Experience of working in a matrix structure and leading through influence as well as line management

This role will require working in the Mile End and Whitechapel offices 2-3 days per week. The position is full time.
