Senior Policy Adviser – The Role

Experienced in UN advocacy on environmental issues, and ideally with some involvement in the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), you are looking for a platform that will allow you to use your expertise to the full and maximise your influence. This Senior Policy Adviser role with WWF UK will enable you to do just that.

With the UN CBD Conference of Parties to take place in 2020 we have the opportunity to halt the decline in biodiversity by influencing the framework the CBD will set 2020-2030 to protect and restore nature. If we are to generate the same level of action as on climate change and sustainable development we must mobilise governments and other stakeholders, which is where your skills come in. You will lead our advocacy activities to influence the CBD’s decision making as well as provide substantial input and support our network’s efforts to raise the political relevance of nature.

Collaborating with colleagues across the organisation you will lead on the further development and implementation of our CBD advocacy strategy with a focus on political engagement to influence the UK and other governments. You will also help design and drive our plan to position nature higher up the political and public agenda through targeted interventions at high-level events. You will coordinate input across our policy and advocacy teams to develop CBD positions as well as lead on influencing the UK’s contribution towards this UN convention, in particular the post-2020 global biodiversity framework. You will work to ensure the UK Government plays a leading role in this global agenda.  Important too, will be the ability to liaise with relevant stakeholders, build partner networks and act as our technical expert at various events

Senior Policy Adviser – Requirements

You must have a relevant degree and broad expertise on environmental policies, as well as substantial experience in UN advocacy on environmental issues. Personal involvement in the CBD process would be a real advantage.

You will have a track record of delivering lobbying results and be used to designing and implementing successful advocacy strategies that involve multiple partners. Comfortable working as part of a team or independently, you will possess excellent influencing, facilitation and negotiation skills.

Good at building and managing relationships, you will be an effective communicator who is comfortable speaking in public

Who are we?

WWF believes in a future where people and nature thrive.

Best known as the world’s leading conservation body, we’ve seen first-hand how wildlife, the environment and human activity are all interlinked.

That’s why our passion for safeguarding the natural world has to be backed up by other environmental action – tackling the global threat of climate change (through our big global campaigns like Earth Hour) and helping people to change the way they live to ease pressure on natural resources.

WWF is at the heart of global activities in all these areas. We have teams of highly skilled professionals working with governments, businesses and communities here in the UK and around the world.
