This Christian charitable conference and retreat centre in Limehouse is in the process of expanding its charitable and commercial business and needs an experienced manager to head up the financial side of its business. Plans are in process for the development of the charity through a major building project which is raising complex financial questions.
The Royal Foundation of St Katharine (here after referred to as RFSK) is a registered charity and a Royal Peculiar. It was founded by Queen Matilda in 1147 adjacent to the Tower of London as a religious community focused on caring for the sick. Its present charitable object is the promotion of the Christian religion by developing and coordinating Christian activities for the public benefit. It is located close to Limehouse DLR within easy walking distance of Canary Wharf and its buildings are arranged around an attractive garden. It is often described as an oasis in the East End.
RFSK supplements its endowment by operating a conference and hospitality business focused on Christian and not for profit organisations; and in recent years, has successfully developed the commercial provision of overnight accommodation to individuals and non-charitable organisations.
Overall responsibility for all aspects of the operation of RFSK, including all statutory and Charity Commission requirements, lies with the Master who is appointed by the Patron, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. He is required to be an ordained priest in the Church of England and has full responsibility for the Christian life of RFSK. He reports directly to the Trustees (known as the Court) and with them is responsible for setting strategic direction for RFSK.
RFSK is in the process of expanding through a major development of the land it owns adjacent to its current site. The vision for the future includes an expanded hospitality and retreat operation, wellbeing & enterprise facilities, new links into the community, integrated with residential accommodation. This will be all underpinned by the recreation of the spiritual community living on site who will have responsibility for much of the daily life of the expanded RFSK. A meanwhile project is currently on the site, focussed on some of the areas that will be present in the new development.
The Finance Director will play a key role in the financial planning of this expansion as well as managing the finances of the existing life of RFSK. They are not expected to be a member of the spiritual core but must be sympathetic to the aims of the charity.
The Financial Director, reporting to the Master, will have day to day responsibility for the financial side of RFSK, with a clear focus on efficiency and effectiveness as well as supporting the highest standards of customer care. The post will work alongside the Operations Director.
The current turnover of RFSK is over £1.6 million per annum and there is a staff of around 45 (not all full time) supplemented by agency staff when necessary. This turnover will rise considerably once the new project comes into being and the project itself with have a very considerable budget.
