Head of Communications
This is a new strategic role, created to develop a more proactive communications and media strategy that will help the Ethical Tea Partnership (ETP) achieve greater impact.
You will work as a part of a small and committed team and use your strong influencing skills with internal and external stakeholders. You will be an excellent communicator, committed to the organisational goals and able and confident at representing ETP publicly and with the media.
Details about the Client
The Ethical Tea Partnership brings together 44 member companies with development partners, NGOs and governments to achieve long-term and sustainable change in tea-growing communities. Their members range from large international brands/retailers to small independent labels. Together they account for more than 50 brands in more than 100 countries. Membership is open to any company involved in the sourcing, trading, or packing of tea, and retailers.
ETP work with tea producers and smallholder farmers in their members' supply chains and help them meet internationally recognised social and environmental standards. ETP provide training on issues that many producers struggle with, e.g. factory health and safety, safe use of agrochemicals, human resource management, and environmental management.
Alongside this, ETP run various programmes that tackle sensitive, complex, and deep-rooted issues that cannot be addressed sufficiently well through auditing and certification. These include: reducing harassment and discrimination of female workers/minority groups in the work place; improving the lives of young people in tea communities and reducing exploitation; improving living conditions and nutrition on tea estates; working towards living wage and benefits, and increasing climate change resilience.
Ultimately their work improves tea sustainability, the lives and livelihoods of tea workers and farmers, and the environment in which tea is produced.
Detailed Job Description
This is a new role, created as part of ETP's 2020 Strategic Review, which recognised that a more proactive communications and media engagement approach is a critical component to accelerating change and achieving ETP's objectives.
Your confidence and intrinsic motivation will drive you to work independently identifying opportunities, challenges and solutions. You will work effectively as a part of a small and committed team and use your strong influencing skills with internal and external stakeholders. You will be an excellent communicator, committed to the organisational goals and able and confident at representing ETP publicly and with the media.
Lead ETP's Communication Strategy
Continually review and assess the most effective ways of communicating and raising the profile of the organisation across PR and media, digital and other external communications channels.
Raise the profile of ETP and its work and ensure that it is viewed as leading the tea and sustainability agenda. Ensure ETP is getting across clear and excellent messaging about the issues and the impact of ETP's work and seeking out proactive media opportunities
Represent ETP publicly and to the media
Oversee the development of brilliant, high impact, clear, targeted communication materials that meet the needs of ETP's different stakeholders
Ensure ETP's communications support and enhance ETP corporate member brands and reputation
Managing one direct report
Experience of communications in the corporate, charitable or political sector, including strategy development
Demonstrable media relations expertise, experience of developing and delivering comprehensive media strategies across a range of platforms for a range of audiences.
Ability to work independently
Ability to proactively spot and react to opportunities
Experience of digital and social media
Experience of successfully developing and managing effective working relationships with internal and external senior stakeholders including senior journalists
Ability to work with communication professionals from large and small companies
Highly developed and proven creative skills, flair, innovation and new ideas.
Experience of communicating on high profile social or sustainability issues
Experience of developing communication approaches to achieve a social mission
Experience of working with media and staff overseas
Experienced at acting as media spokesperson
Experience of working with companies with highly recognisable brands
