Director of Operations / Deputy CEO

YMCA West London

c. £70k

YMCA is the world's largest youth charity. YMCA West London has been a presence in the area for nearly 150 years delivering accommodation and community services across the London boroughs of Ealing, Harrow, Hillingdon and Hounslow. Rooted in a Christian ethos, we focus on helping young people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, and our services include providing bed spaces for 388 young people (16-35) with housing and support needs, foyers, health and wellbeing services, youth support and advice, café lounge, education and training, and a wide range of children and families work.

In common with many charities in the sector, our operating environment has never been tougher, and we have undertaken an extensive review of our structure and operations in order to respond to the major challenges we’re facing. This new role consolidates delivery of housing and other services, and increases the organisation’s resilience and co-ordination. Further proposals to improve efficiency and effectiveness would be welcomed from the successful candidate once in post. You’ll also be an important contributor to the social care network in the areas in which we operate, building strong relationships with partners and influencing the development of service provision and commissioning.

Applicants should have extensive practical experience in managing complex services, ideally in housing and support, and of working with vulnerable client groups. We will also want to see a clear track record of leading a diverse and multi-functional team (both permanent and agency/bank staff). Social enterprise principles and experience are vital, and you’ll be adept at strategic analysis and business planning, to deliver smoothly-functioning operational structures. Excellent communication and negotiation skills are essential, as is experience in a related organisation (charity, youth and homelessness work, community or education). Insight into governance as a non-executive director would be a distinct asset, and you should be pragmatic, positive and passionate about securing the best outcomes for the people we serve.
