Desk Editor 

A great opportunity for an experienced desk editor to work for a national association. 

Our client promotes excellence in small animal practice through education and science. They are a professional body to serve veterinary surgeons that treat companion animals. The majority of their members work in practice, and represent over a third of the working veterinary surgeons in the UK. 

Position:Desk Editor 
Location: Gloucester, Gloucestershire 
Contract Type: Temporary - up to 12 months 
Salary: £22,500 - 25,000 per annum depending on experience 
Benefits: 7% contributions towards Group Personal Pension, Life Assurance and 23 days’ holiday 

About the Role: 

Our client is looking for a temporary Desk Editor to join its publications team to work on its internationally-renowned series of veterinary publications for up to 12 months covering maternity leave. Our client delivers a full programme of education courses, produces a range of publications and other resources that contribute to the continuing professional development of veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses. 

The main purpose of the role is to participate in and contribute to delivering all related publishing projects as directed by the Publications Manager and Commissioning/Managing Editor. 

About You: 

They are looking for an individual with proven experience of managing book projects, including liaising with authors and freelances, and preferably with scientific publishing/content knowledge. Additionally, experience in copy-editing and proofreading is fundamental. 

A degree in life or health sciences would be advantageous and relevant experience in STM publishing is desirable. Being well versed in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel, email and internet searching is essential. 

The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with an exceptional eye for detail. The right person will be highly organised, have an ability to act on their own initiative and manage their own workload and resources effectively and to schedule. This will include seeing projects through from handover to publication. 

They will also need to work proactively, strive to make a difference and enjoy a challenge. They will need to work proactively as part of the team and have the ability to clearly convey and receive messages building consensus with internal departments. This is an active role and the candidate must be flexible and be able to work in a pressured environment to achieve their objectives. 

A desire to understand the sector to build knowledge and credibility is important.
