Job Purpose

To manage the delivery of ILMs communications and marketing activity.

Key responsibilities

  • Work with CEO to establish organisational strategy - media and public relations,, member and partner comms, brand marketing, digital and social media and production of materials
  • Increase the organisation’s profile across media, and with influencers and organisations - write releases, articles and statements, attend events and act as a spokesperson when necessary
  • Take responsibility for the development and management of the website and blog, including generating content, making improvements to functionality, maximising its potential and monitoring its performance
  • Manage and expand social media presence, sourcing and sharing newsworthy information from across the charity. Produce regular reports on social media activity
  • Produce member communications and events to build engagement promote awareness, increase attendance, optimise sales etc.
  • Support CEO in delivery of ILMs partnerships strategy
  • Manage ILMs member acquisition activity
  • Brand ‘guardian’ with oversight of all communications / materials - creating and maintaining appropriate and consistent language and terminology across all media
  • Delivery of Annual Conference (materials, branding, communications etc.)
  • Manage relationships with suppliers of services essential to communication work
  • Keep up to date on best practice within the charity sector generally and particularly changes to communications innovation, legislation and codes of practice
  • Provide first class customer service to ILM members and associates
  • Ensure all actions and communications enhance ILMs brand
  • Be familiar with and adhere to all relevant ILM policies and procedures
  • Comply with data protection and Health and Safety requirements
  • Contribute to annual planning and budget planning process
  • Maintain ILM member database and website (allocated areas)
  • Any other duties as reasonably required in line with the skills, knowledge and experience

Person specification


  • Proven experience of marketing and communications
  • Working knowledge of website and social media
  • Project management and planning skills
  • Good communicator -  in writing, by telephone and in person
  • Excellent interpersonal skills across a wide range of people
  • Ability to work unsupervised and to prioritise own workload effectively
  • Commitment to high levels of customer-service
  • The ability to analyse financial and statistical information
  • Advanced IT skills
  • Commitment to the ethos and objectives of ILM
  • Able and willing to work outside standard hours and occasionally outside of London in order to deliver requirements of the role


  • Knowledge and experience of legacy giving within the charity sector
  • Experience of membership or other training organisations
