Major Gifts Officer
Sydney, Australia
Work for the Sydney Symphony, resident orchestra at the Sydney Opera House
Competitive Salary
The Sydney Symphony (SSO) is a leader in the performance of symphonic music, enjoying a position of national and international esteem. The Orchestra’s current Principal Conductor & Artistic Advisor is Vladimir Ashkenazy and its Chief Conductor & Artistic Director Designate (2014) is the dynamic American Conductor, David Robertson. The Sydney Symphony is seeking to extend Australia’s musical culture through an extensive program of musical training and school-education activities for students of every age group. A major part of the SSO’s mission revolves around giving concerts of exceptional quality, driven by maintaining a community of musicians who are amongst the world’s best. In doing so, the SSO is moving towards a goal of preserving and re-inventing the experience of symphonic music in ways that meet the needs of 21st century audiences.
As the Orchestra celebrates its 80th Anniversary this year, the organisation is looking ahead and expanding its engagement with its audiences in Sydney and across the country, as well as overseas. As part of this, the SSO is seeking an experienced fundraising professional to guide the major gifts program in the next phase of its development. Reporting to the Director of Development, the Major Gifts Officer will have responsibility for securing six, seven and eight figure level major gifts and actively managing a portfolio of prospects and donors who have the capacity to support SSO’s artistic mission and vision at this level.
The Major Gifts Officer will work with the Director of Development as well as the Managing Director, SSO Board and volunteers, and other Development and Communications team members. The position will provide leadership and help manage other initiatives and activities as determined by the Director of Development.
The ideal candidate will be a seasoned fundraiser who is comfortable cultivating and closing major gifts, and has been part of a significant campaign. The Major Gifts Officer will foster an integrated, relationship- focused fund development program, contribute to fundraising strategies and long-range plans for departmental and organisational goals, and provide input into the design and execution of the SSO’s next major campaign. Experience with patron services management or in a patron-focused environment will be helpful.
