We work hard to raise money for our conservation work and we rely heavily on donations, legacies and grants. About the role
We work hard to raise money for our conservation work and we rely heavily on donations, legacies and grants. And while our fundraising effort has worked fantastically over the years, with notable successes like the Neptune Coastline Campaign, we appreciate that there’s more we need to do, more you’ll help us to do.
Leading a talented 22-strong fundraising team, you’ll help us connect people of all ages and backgrounds with places they love, so that they want to help us protect them. But how do we inspire more people to support our cause? How do we grow our family of supporters and increase our legacy income and number of pledgers? You’ll know, and you’ll have the personality, intellect and drive to make it happen. The size of the challenge? We already have four million members, but we know from research that there are around 20 million people who might see themselves as supporters or potential supporters because they already visit our places or do other things with us. We want you to help us deepen that support, so we attract more donations, develop our donor programmes and grow our £42 million p.a. legacy income by doubling our legacy pledgers by 2020. Our property teams are focused on improving the conservation of our places and the experience we offer to our visitors. Encouraging grant-making organisations to share our vision is a critically important part of this role. From engaging major donors to inspiring teams involved in local and property fundraising, you’ll bring innovation and creativity to our work, ensuring that we’re seen as a role model for fundraising excellence. And as well as your fundraising team, you’ll be able to call on the significant resources of our internal marketing agency and our other support services. You will enthuse everyone around you to get behind your work – from the Chairman and Deputy Chairman, to colleagues in other departments, to Trustees and donors. In everything you do you’ll champion the importance of our supporters. You’ll lead the Trust’s thinking on political and economic changes that will affect our voluntary income and you’ll represent the Trust as a senior figure in the voluntary sector.
About you
You’re a natural leader, confident, credible and inspirational, with a sophisticated work approach. You’re quick to build lasting professional relationships and you’re used to working at a senior level. You’ll have worked in complex organisations, and you’ll be confident influencing and persuading colleagues to achieve your goals.
Your background? Ideally, although not exclusively, fundraising. You could, for example, be working at a senior level in marketing or communications. For us, it’s how you approach fundraising that matters, how you make things happen, how you work with others, how you bring new ideas to the table. But whatever your background, it’s important that you have a good understanding of the voluntary/not-for-profit sector. Understandably, you’ll need to be operationally strong, with excellent project and people management skills. You’ll enjoy working with others in multi-functional teams and while you’re strong on detail and getting things done, you never lose sight of the bigger picture. You’ll develop a culture of innovation, define the policies and standards for fundraising, and ensure we’re a role model for fundraising excellence.
As a strategic lead in the organisation, you’ll contribute outside of the fundraising arena, helping the Trust to develop its thinking and strategy. Externally, you’ll be a highly respected ambassador for the charity.
Incredibly rewarding
Help us do great things and we’ll do great things for you and your career. We’ll give you the support and continued professional development you need, and we appreciate that work/life balance is important. You can also look forward to free admission to all our incredible places, and a helpful 20% off at our shops, cafes and restaurants. But they’re just the benefits we can tell you about here. About us
We look after everything from historic houses and gardens, to coastline and castles, nature reserves and villages. And we want as many people as possible to enjoy these special places and spaces – for generations to come. We want people of all ages and backgrounds to get involved with them, be inspired by them, and love them as much as we do. That’s why we’ve put some bold ambitions in place. We want everyone in England, Wales and Northern Ireland to feel like a member of the National Trust and, by 2020, we want to have grown our membership to five million.
