At the core of every charity is the overriding challenge of raising funds. The British Heart Foundation is no exception. Indeed, some of the challenges it faces as the nation’s heart charity are far greater. A great deal of its investment goes into heart research an activity that can be difficult for potential supporters to understand and connect with.

To meet this challenge, the Director of Fundraising is aiming to raise the profile and to increase its relevance to its target audiences and is hiring three individuals to really help drive this strategy: Head of Volunteering, a Project Directors in charge of Supporter Acquisition and another Project Director in charge of Customer Relationship Management.

The Position

This role would often be described as a Head of Community Fundraising. There is, however, a real need within the BHF for focus upon the recruitment and retention of fundraising volunteers and we will be looking for individuals with a strong track record of delivery within this stream of fundraising. The role will command consummate management skill, as you will be overseeing a significant headcount. You will also need to be pretty mobile, as you will be liaising with a large team of fundraising volunteers across the UK.

• To achieve step change in volunteer recruitment and retention for the BHF.

• To build, retain and develop a viable and active volunteer network across the UK with extensive focus on volunteer recruitment and retention.

• To develop partnerships both across the Foundation and externally in order to build volunteer network.

• To develop, enable and empower Regional Directors so that they are able to maximise the potential of Fundraising Volunteer Managers to deliver the plan and to achieve income targets.

The Person

• Experience of motivating, directing and monitoring remotely located staff is essential

• An empowering and motivational leadership style is essential

• Experience of developing and delivering a volunteer recruitment and retention strategy is essential

• Experience of working across an organisation and of influencing to achieve results

• The ability to motivate, develop and inspire staff is essential

• The ability to travel extensively

• Experience in volunteer management essential

• Experience in winning and maximising external partnerships is required

• Strong strategic planning skills

• Strong negotiating and influencing skills

• Results focus is essential

• An ability to translate and adapt organisational strategy to local division

Key Competencies

Strategy and Planning:

• To develop a strategy to build a viable volunteer network for the BHF thus increasing income generated via volunteers

• To ensure that the strategy improves the cost effectiveness of volunteer fundraising for the BHF

• To involve local staff in developing effective regional and area volunteer plans

• To monitor delivery of regional plans (and KPIs)

• To contribute to the development of the Fundraising Strategy

Recognition:

• Identify recognitions and reward incentives for volunteers

Monitoring and Evaluation:

• To set targets against centrally-agreed strategic KPIs for each strand of volunteer activity against these.

• To use management information to inform on achievement-to-date of volunteer activity, producing reports as required

• To use management information to evaluate volunteer activity, taking appropriate and timely remedial action to ensure achievement of targets, deadlines and KPIs.

Budgeting:

• To devise a budget for volunteer fundraising (3yr rolling)

• To set financial targets and monitor activity accordingly

Leadership and Line Management:

• To take a lead role in volunteer recruitment

• To lead, develop and manage a team or Regional Directors so that they effectively lea and direct their regions

• To ensure that regional managers are effectively managed, developed and managed to implement regional plans and manage regional staff.

• To ensure that Fundraising Volunteer Managers are developed, empowered and managed to fundraise effectively through volunteers in their areas

• To develop a culture of empowerment and success across Community Fundraising

• To ensure ongoing development of all staff

• To ensure that volunteers are effectively communicated with, motivated and managed, engaging personally with key volunteer initiatives

Business Development:

• To develop a partnership with BHF Shops Division in order to recruit and retain volunteers

• To research, test and develop new initiatives and products to encourage people to give time to the BHF

• To research, test and develop new initiatives and products that can be delivered with and through volunteers e.g. schools initiatives

• To network in key area across the UK to influence and win support

• To establish partnerships across the Foundation and externally in support of the volunteering objective.

Communication and Co-ordination:

• To direct a proportion of the Regional Communications staff time in support of volunteer objective

• To ensure that all Fundraising activity carried out in the regions is effectively co-ordinated and that joint working is effective.

• To work closely with regional management team colleagues to ensure integration of volunteer activity with other regional activity

Supporter Journey:

• To ensure that all volunteer contacts and transactional data is captured on database

• To construct a communications plan for volunteer contacts, in line with national communications planning

• To monitor and evaluate results of these communications and recommend adjustments accordingly.
