The RNBT is the largest of the independent naval charities providing or assisting in the provision of relief in cases of necessity or distress to more than 80% of the serving and retired Royal Naval and Royal Marine population and their dependents. The definition of need is wide ranging and in addition to making grants to individuals, the Trust also runs a fine 50 bed care home in Gillingham, Kent. With 60 + full time staff equivalents, the Trust is a vibrant, modern registered charity occupying its own premises in Portsmouth, co-located with 6 other naval and military charities providing something of a ‘one-stop benevolence shop.’ The RNBT provides much of the common administrative and financial support services for the co-located charities.
The role of financial controller is pivotal in the efficient running of the Trust and calls for:

• excellent communication skills
• wide knowledge and understanding of all common office based IT applications including financial accounting packages and
• a desire to work in the charity field.
The right person will ideally have experience in the voluntary sector although this is not essential, however, wide experience in financial management with responsibility for handling a medium sized business (net assets ~£33M) is necessary. The right person would also need ACA or an equivalent qualification.
Reporting to the Chief Executive, the Financial Controller’s responsibilities include:
• Overall management of the financial function.
• Secretary to a number of trustee committees including preparation of briefing documents.
• Pension schemes secretary.
• Production of management and annual accounts, budgets and plans.
• Pensions, insurances, investments, taxation and risk management.
