The Piece Hall

In 2017 one of the most extraordinary buildings in Britain – The Piece Hall in Halifax – will be fully reopened following a £19million conservation programme. There will be nowhere like it in the world. Yorkshire’s monumental Grade I listed structure is the only surviving cloth hall in the UK, an iconic symbol of the important role played by Georgian Halifax at the booming centre of the world’s woollen trade.

At the heart of the town since 1779, The Piece Hall will be transformed into a 21st century town square for everyone to enjoy. A special place to be, the princely architectural gem will be a magnetic destination: a place where people will meet and all paths cross for work, business, leisure, arts and entertainment.

The immense, 66,000 sq ft open-air piazza will be enclosed by a mix of independent bars, restaurants, shops, cafés and creative businesses. Alongside a new gallery for leading visual art exhibitions, the stories of Georgian Halifax will be told in a state-of-the-art heritage centre and spaces that take you a step back in time. A vibrant cultural quarter for a new generation, with direct links to Square Chapel Centre for the Arts, Orangebox Young People’s Centre and the new Central Library and Archive.

Whilst Yorkshire’s international reputation as a compelling destination takes hold, The Piece Hall is preparing for its most exciting chapter in decades.

The Piece Hall transformation programme is led by Calderdale Council and supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, with additional support from Garfield Weston Foundation and The Wolfson Foundation. On completion, The Piece Hall Trust is an independent body who will be responsible for managing the space and realising this next chapter.
