Autism Wessex is a regional charity which provides specialist services for people affected by autism across the counties of Dorset, Somerset, Hampshire and Wiltshire. Founded in 1968 by parents of children with autism, Autism Wessex has 416 employees and nearly 150 volunteers. It is based in Christchurch in Dorset.

The philosophy of Autism Wessex is that, with appropriate education, support or care, the impact of autism can be reduced and people with Autism can be active citizens enjoying maximum independence and a good quality of life.

Autism Wessex is a significant employer in the local region. Its teams are composed of a variety of positions, including community support workers, fundraisers, finance staff, administrators, teaching assistants, marketing officers and support workers.

Services are divided into three main areas – a school for residential and respite care, social care, and advocacy and advice. They are available for anyone who needs them – people with autism and associated difficulties, families and professionals.

Portfield School, located in Christchurch, is a purpose built facility that provides education and residential options for up to 70 children and young people with autism. One of the UK’s first schools for children with autism, Portfield has more than 40 years’ experience of providing specialist education and care.

Pupils benefit from an expert support team and an array of specially tailored resources and facilities, including a therapy pool, sensory rooms and a secure outdoor play area. Teaching takes place in light, brightly-coloured classrooms.

Community Wessex is another service delivered by Autism Wessex. Community Wessex provides personalised social care services to people with autism and other development disorders, learning disabilities and related mental health problems.

Community Wessex aims to provide tailor-made care and support packages which identify individual needs and goals and help with the development of life and social skills and the capacity for friendships and relationships. The team also assists with holiday and short breaks and provides services to people in their homes for the purpose of accessing community activities such as work, college or day services.

Community Wessex, which works across Dorset, Hampshire, Wiltshire and Somerset, is (as of May 2016) on a recruitment drive with vacancies including support worker and manager.

Autism Wessex also delivers advocacy services. The charity provides advice for employers about autism, regular support and social groups for Asperger’s and autism and both free training workshops and longer courses.
