About WOMANKIND Worldwide
Womankind Worldwide is an international women’s rights charity which works to improve the lives of women and girls by partnering with women’s rights organisations in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Womankind Worldwide was founded in 1989 and its 30-strong team is based in London.
The charity was the brainchild of Sir Alec Reed, founder of the Reed employment agency. The Reed Foundation provided funding to enable the organisation to establish itself.
Womankind Worldwide currently works in 13 countries, including Afghanistan, Bolivia, Kenya, Nepal, Peru and Sierra Leone. It has partnerships with 28 women’s rights organisations. They provide direct support for women and girls as well as working to change discriminatory laws and policies and challenge attitudes and stereotypes.
The charity has supported projects to establish refuges for women and children escaping violence, support new women MPs, create women-only savings and loan associations and provide human rights training.
As a result of Womankind supported projects around one million people were reached in Kenya with radio announcements about violence against women and girls, over 8,000 women in Zimbabwe were given free legal advice, and nearly 800 Ethiopian women started running businesses thanks to the support of the Siiqqee Women’s Development Association.
Located in London, Womankind Worldwide does not have any staff based overseas or run offices in other countries. In-country partner organisations implement its projects, with the Womankind programme team in London providing ongoing support via telephone and email. The UK team also makes regular visits to monitor work and meet project staff and participants.
The charity’s aim to build long-term relationships with two to three carefully selected women’s rights organisations in each country it works in. It broadcasts the demands and successes of women’s rights organisations on the international stage so they can increase their profile and gain additional support from funders. Womankind Worldwide also advocates for women’s rights in the UK and internationally and fundraises on behalf of women’s rights organisations.
Womankind’s income comes from a mix of private donations and legacies, UK and international government grants, grants from trusts and foundations such as Comic Relief and the Big Lottery Fund and some income from community groups and companies. Around a third of the charity’s total income is provided by individuals.
In addition to paid staff, Womankind Worldwide has London-based teams of volunteers and ambassadors.
