The British Heart Foundation (BHF) was founded in 1961 by a group of medical professionals whose aim was to fund research into the causes, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of heart and circulatory disease. That vision and aim is still going strong 53 years later.
The charity is expanding its Major Gifts team and is currently recruiting for a Development Manager. In order to get under the skin of the role and the organisation, as well as the characteristics and skills the ideal candidate should possess, Third Sector’s Careers Content Editor, Antje Derks, talked to Helen Pert - Development Director at the BHF to find out more.

Coronary heart disease is the UK's single biggest killer, permanently scarring the lives of millions. More people than ever now survive heart attacks as a result of the BHF’s s research, but there is still so much more to be done for the thousands of people living with devastating heart conditions.
The BHF is the pioneer of heart research in the UK and is its biggest funder. We have totally changed the landscape around heart disease, for example, how we educate the public with hard-hitting, informative videos that push the boundaries. Without our ground-breaking research, the development of clot-busting medication and stents would not be where it is today, meaning more lives would be lost.
As a fundraising charity, we continue to go from strength –to –strength, always moving with the times. Indeed, we just had our first ever million pound pledger and we have had a truly great fundraising year
A year ago we appointed a new Chief Executive who brings new ideas, initiatives and plans to the table. All in all, the BHFis a very exciting and dynamic environment in which to work.
Tell me about the Development Manager role
The Development Manager position is brand new to help launch our private Fundraising Board which will allow us to increase our fundraising and raise substantially more from high value supporters. The main aim of the Board is to raise in excess of ten million pounds from high net worth individuals, charitable trusts and companies.
Another function of the Development Manager’s role is to nurture and develop our “Heart Pioneers” club. It is a membership club for donors who pledge between one and five thousand pounds. We already have a great offer for our Heart Pioneers. We are keen to do a lot more to develop the programme and make it into a top notch offering.
What sort of person are you looking for?
Major gift fundraising is all about connecting very personally with our supporters. We like to build relationships that last. The person who would be most suited to the position would have a proven ability to forge and maintain exceptional relationships with supporters and team members.
The people who donate to our charity come from all walks of life and have various levels of income. The ideal person needs to be comfortable with all types of people. They must not be afraid to ask for money as it is vital to help us continue our life-saving work into the fight against coronary heart disease – the UK’s single biggest killer.
It is also important for us to have someone in this role that has experience of developing a high value membership scheme and can bring this experience to the Heart Pioneers programme.
